12 Steps to Success: The Podcast

I started 12 Steps to Success because there is only so much I can learn by examining my own life. Writing gives me somewhere to explore what I think about success, purpose, identity and change, but some of the most interesting ideas emerge when I hear how somebody else has experienced the same questions completely differently.

The people I speak with have taken very different routes through their lives and careers, and I’m interested in what those experiences have taught them rather than simply what they have achieved. We talk about the decisions that changed things, the assumptions they’ve had to reconsider, what success means to them now and, occasionally, what they got completely wrong along the way.

I’m also not particularly interested in turning somebody’s life into a neat success story after the fact. Very few of us experience our lives with the benefit of knowing how everything turns out, and the choices that look obvious in retrospect rarely felt that way while we were making them. I’d much rather understand the uncertainty, mistakes and changes of mind that happened in between.

The conversations start in different places, but they’re all attempts to understand a little more about how people build lives that make sense to them, and how that understanding changes as they do.
